In February 2026, the Olympic flame will return to Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
The last Winter Olympics held in Cortina were in 1956. The title of the official documentary film from that time was Vertigine Bianca (White Vertigo).
Postwar reconstruction, the promise of the glamorous “Dolce Vita,” and the shadow of the Cold War.
Those 11 days, when every kind of fervor swirled in the Dolomite valley, are said to be the origin of the modern Olympics.
This time, we unravel the untold drama etched into the snowy mountains of Tofana, the venue for 2026.
Broadcast Revolution and the Failed Torch Relay

The 1956 Cortina Games were the first Winter Olympics ever broadcast live on television.
Italy’s RAI broadcasting association undertook what was considered a reckless challenge at the time: deploying 36 television cameras across the snowy mountains and distributing footage to eight European countries.
However, this new technology showed its teeth during the opening ceremony.
A Historic Fall for the Olympic Record Books
The final torchbearer was Italian speed skater Guido Caroli. Just as he entered the stadium and was skating toward the cauldron,
Guido Caroli suddenly took a spectacular tumble on the ice.
Why did this speed skating star fall…? He had tripped over a cable for the television broadcast.
The stadium erupted in gasps, but Caroli kept the torch held high, refusing to extinguish the flame. He immediately got up and lit the cauldron as if nothing had happened. This moment is remembered as the instant tradition and change collided and began to coexist.
The Legend of “Black Lightning” Toni Sailer
The star of this tournament was 20-year-old Austrian skier Toni Sailer.
He became the first to achieve the Alpine triple crown in downhill, slalom, and giant slalom. His giant slalom victory was particularly dominant, finishing a staggering 6.2 seconds ahead of second place.
The Broken Strap and the Untold Story of Sportsmanship
Behind Sailer’s triple crown lay a drama still recounted today.
Just 15 minutes before the downhill start, the leather strap securing Sailer’s ski boot suddenly snapped. He had no spare.
His rival, Hansl Senner, the trainer of the Italian team, saved him from this desperate predicament.
“Use this.”
Senger removed the strap from his own boot and handed it to Ziller. Without this act of sportsmanship, the Ziller legend would never have been born.
Japan’s long-cherished dream: Chiharu Igaya’s “Silver”
At this competition, a single Japanese skier broke through the dominance of European athletes in the alpine skiing world. His name was Igaya Chiharu.
At the time, he was studying abroad at the prestigious Dartmouth College in the United States. He was a skier who relied not on sheer grit, but on rational training methods.
After the first run of the men’s slalom, Igaya was in sixth place, 2.9 seconds behind the leader. In the second run, he delivered an astonishing performance. He clocked a time of 1 minute 48.5 seconds, the second-fastest overall time behind Ziller, overtaking the top contenders to claim the silver medal.
This was a monumental achievement: the first medal for a Japanese athlete and the first for an Asian athlete at the Winter Olympics.
The photo of the podium—gold medalist Ziller, silver medalist Inagawa, and bronze medalist Stig Solander (Sweden)—standing shoulder to shoulder, smiling, remains a testament to friendship that transcended national borders.
The “Red Whirlwind” and “Sophia Loren”
1956 was also the year the “Cold War” entered the world of sports.
The Soviet Union made its Winter Olympics debut and immediately claimed the most medals, including seven gold. Notably, they defeated the absolute powerhouse Canada 2-0 in ice hockey, showcasing the overwhelming strength of their “state amateurs” (national team players). From here, the “Red Storm” swept through the Olympics.
Meanwhile, the spectator stands were dazzling.
When Italy’s national treasure, actress Sophia Loren, appeared draped in pure white fur, spectators and photographers alike abandoned the events to swarm around her.
Cortina d’Ampezzo, beloved by Audrey Hepburn and Hemingway, was not merely a competition venue but also a salon where celebrities from around the world gathered.
New history forged on a legendary stage
In 2026, the venue for the women’s Alpine skiing events, Olympia delle Tofane, is the very place where, 70 years ago, Toni Sailer raced down at dizzying speeds and Chiharu Inotani clinched the silver medal.
Seventy years after the Cortina Games, where a torchbearer stumbled over a TV cable and fell. Today, we stand poised to witness historic moments through 8K broadcasts and the internet.
Yet some things remain unchanged: the harshness of the snowy mountains and the drama of humans challenging their limits.
February 6, 2026: The legend continues.
