オリンピックの閉会式といえば、巨大なスタジアムで花火が上がり、選手たちがわちゃわちゃ行進して一騒ぎする…そんなイメージがするのではないでしょうか。
しかし、2026年ミラノ・コルティナ五輪のフィナーレは、次元が違います。
まず、会場はミラノではありません。ミラノから電車で1時間半、古都ヴェローナにあるアレーナ・ディ・ヴェローナ（Arena di Verona）です。
ここは、紀元1世紀（西暦30年頃）に建てられた、正真正銘の古代ローマの円形闘技場です。
かつて剣闘士（グラディエーター）たちが命を賭けて戦い、猛獣狩りが行われ、観衆が血に熱狂した場所。そんな「修羅の舞台」が2000年の時を経て、平和の祭典の幕を下ろす場所になるのです。
閉会式は『古代遺跡』ですが、開会式は『アルマーニ』のファッションショーでした。イタリアの【過去と現在】の対比がすごすぎる。
コロッセオより古く、世界で最も美しい「廃墟」
イタリアといえばローマの「コロッセオ」が有名ですが、実はこのアレーナ・ディ・ヴェローナの方が建設は古いと言われています。しかも、保存状態は世界最高レベル。
中世の地震で外壁の一部は崩れましたが、階段状の観客席はほぼ完全な形で残っており、現在も世界最大級の野外オペラ会場として現役で使われています。
閉会式のテーマ “Beauty in Action”
閉会式の演出では、この遺跡を「単なる背景」ではなく「主役」とするようです。
ステージデザイン「水の一滴」
石造りの荒々しいアレーナの中央に、鏡面またはLEDで構成された「水の一滴」を模した巨大ステージが出現します。
冬の雪が解けて水になり、海へ還る循環を表現しており、古代の石と最新デジタルの対比が幻想的な光景を生み出します。
聖火の「同期」消灯
ヴェローナにはメイン聖火台がありません。
そこで、ミラノとコルティナにある聖火が消える瞬間と完全に同期して、アレーナ上のLEDやライティングが静かに消灯する、デジタルとリアルを融合させた「静寂の演出」が計画されています。
「ロミオとジュリエット」と「カーニバル」の街
ヴェローナの魅力は、アレーナだけではありません。
シェイクスピアのロミオとジュリエットの舞台としても知られ、ジュリエットの家（バルコニー）はアレーナから徒歩圏内です。
さらに2026年の五輪期間中は、ヴェローナにとって特別な季節です。
- ヴェローナ・イン・ラブ（Verona in Love）
バレンタインデー周辺に行われる、街中がハートで埋め尽くされるイベント。 - ヴェナルディ・ニョコラール（Venerdì Gnocolar）
490年以上の歴史を持つイタリア最古級のカーニバル。「ニョッキの金曜日」と呼ばれ、仮装パレードが街を練り歩きます。
五輪の閉会式に訪れる観光客は、スポーツの熱狂だけでなく、中世から続く愛と食の祝祭に巻き込まれることになるでしょう。

1世紀にこの客席に座っていた古代ローマ人は、目の前で流れる血に歓声を上げました。
2千年後、同じ石の席に座る私たちは、世界中から集まったアスリートを称え、平和の火が消えるのを見守ります。
場所は同じでも、人が見る光景は変わりました。
アレーナ・ディ・ヴェローナでの閉会式は、人類が2千年でどれだけ変わったのか、あるいは変わらなかったのかを問いかけます。
